Up-close with Monkey’s and Sloths in Roatan

AJ’s Monkey’s and Sloths, Roatan, Honduras

Dreaming of snuggling with a sloth? Talking with a Macaw? Being used as a jungle gym for tiny monkeys?

The wonderful part of visiting locations that rely on tourism for their economic stability, is that if you often have the choice between mega corporate run destinations, as well as more “mom and pop” places. As travelers, we will always default to “mom and pop.” (Not to say that this never backfires, but we have been able to experience some pretty amazing things more often than not.)

We were brought to AJ’s Monkey’s and Sloths because our tour provider, {Caban Excursions}, tipped us off that the larger sanctuaries on the island are filled with the mega buses of cruise tours, and the lines were long, and interactions short. So glad we had this expertise along with us, as long lines and vacation don’t mix for us!

When we first arrived, we were told that it might be a few minute wait, as there was a group ahead of us, but before I could even checkout the little food warmer to see what local yummies they might be serving, we were escorted back through the gate.

Within minutes of arriving, we were back inside of the sanctuary, and Buggie was holding a sloth, followed by a very apprehensive Buddy. (If I didn’t know better, I think that sloth is telling him a secret!) Girl holding a slothboy holding a sloth

Next encounter was with a beautiful baby scarlet macaw, the national bird of Honduras.  Turns out RED BIRD was most interested in nibbling on hats than pleasant conversation. (Buddy refused to hold HER, because he is pretty partial to his hat these days.) Bubba was happy to share in the experience with Daddy, but only if the bird didn’t get too close. The highlight of this stop was the monkey cage. Yes, you quite literally get caged in with a troop of juvenile monkeys!

(Those of you who live by the mantra “Not my circus, not my monkeys,” this was exactly as chaotic as it might sound. Chaotic, but a blast, since in the end, no, these are not my monkeys.)

The monkey cage was actually quite large, however, the monkeys would not go in the unshaded section of the cage. This had its benefits for those who did not want to be pounced on by a baby primate could stand in the sun-soaked area, and remain unbothered.

Buddy found this to be most enjoyable, as he can relate to their playful spirit.

These monkeys are not trained to entertain, and Buddy was slightly disappointed, because he was having a difficult time getting any of them to land on him. Apparently he doesn’t know that one would have to stand still for any amount of time have once join you for company.

Bubba would say, “monkey owie,” as he did sustain a quick bite to the forearm. It didn’t break the skin, and THE OWNER stepped in really fast to separate the naughty monkey from the group. THE OWNER did mention that juvenile monkeys sometimes mistake small toddlers for other monkeys.

In an attempt not to create a monkey stigma for the rest of his life, I encouraged Bubba to remain in the monkey cage even after being nibbled on. (Of course I stood a little closer to try to monitor his toddler behavior so that it wasn’t as playful for the monkeys.) In the end, Bubba would tell you “monkey on my head” as he delighted in the mischief of the monkeys perched on everyone’s head, and even I got in on the monkey business! This facility does have a little one stall bathroom with a flush toilet and running water sink. (Hey, these are the details that are important to fellow Mamas, am I right?)

At just $10 per person, including Bubba, this was the highlight of the day for the kids. As with every trip, my highlight is always watching and experiencing new things through my children’s eyes.
